LOCATION: Alexandria naval base.
On the morning of the 8th of November 1969, the men on board of the two Egyptian destroyers ENS Dumyat and ENS Nasser were readying themselves for a regular military drill in the waters of Matrooh .The men were curious this time as the high commander of the naval forces admiral Mahmoud Abd Elrahman Fahmy was coming to oversee their deportation for their journey, which made them suspicious about the nature of their operation.

The ships were ready with their cargo, ordinance and Ammunition. The fuel tanks were fully loaded and engines were working fine. Big guns, anti-air craft guns and anti-submarine warfare equipment were 100% capable and functioning. Medics and firefighting teams were ready and fully equipped, the radars were normally functioning and everything was good to go, yet the men were waiting for the high commander for permission.

LOCATION: Mansura air base.
Air sergeant Samir Aziz is leaving for his accommodation room outside of the base after a heavy training day.
Samir Aziz is one of the best pilots of the 46 night squadron, whose main job is escorting and protecting bombers on the night raids over Sinai at night time. Also he’s training the fresh pilots on life ammunition sorties and missions at day time. Sure a man with such an occupied schedule was dying to have some rest.

LOCATION: Alexandria naval base
Lieutenant Adly Attia the Capitan of Dumyat, waiting anxiously for the arrival of the commander. He didn’t want to inform the commander about some technical issues in order not to postpone the deportation time, as his men are capable of operating despite them .The Capitan also is very certain that the purpose of mission is not a drill, and his suspicions were turned into action as he ordered the signal officer to make flndra ribbon of 10 meters to be hung on the ship. The flinder ribbon is a marking of success of any operation which is hung on the ship when it arrives back.

Few meters away the ENS Nasser is anchored, preparing for the deportation as well. Sergeant Amgad Fahmy the gunning commander is giving to the Capitan of the Nasser lieutenant Adel Alsharaky a good to go signal after checking the guns system. In the command chamber on board of the Nasser, colonel Mostafa Kamel Mansour is accompanying lieutenant Adel to oversee the drill.
As the time goes, sergeant Amgad stares at the sea remembering his late brother Ismail. Ismail fell during the Suez crisis in the naval battle of burlos, where the Egyptian torpedo boats were able to damage the French Battleship jean Bart despite the enemy’s air superiority and technical advantage. That is why Amgad joined the navy to avenge his brother and the broken nation.

The wait ends but the admiral didn’t arrive, instead secretary of the high commander brigadier general Glal Fahmy arrived. He carried two closed envelopes to be delivered personally to captains of the two destroyers, which includes the mission details and coordinates.
After checking the letters inside, both captains gave the orders for deportation…..and the mission starts.

The destroyer Dumyat was the flag ship for this campaign, they were both heading east with unusual speed after changing their course from west to east, towards occupied Sinai and the fighting zones. Both destroyers made a lot of escorting sorties near Port Said and the occupied territories, but never engaged in real action with the enemy. For the men on board this was their baptism of fire.
The nature of the operation was as follows:
• ENS Dumyat would shell the enemy’s ammunition storage emplacements at Baluza, an area located 50 km inland from sea shore which is far from the artillery range of the Egyptian army stationed on the western bank of the Suez Canal.

• ENS Nasser would shell the Hawk batteries which are the surface to air missiles stationed in Rumana. An area located 40 km inland from sea shore, that’s why this mission was ideal for the navy to execute.

What the men on board of the destroyers didn’t know about, is that their mission is part of greater mission engineered by the head of the Egyptian secret intelligence brigadier Mohamed Sadeq. As the ships were heading to their destination in the north, a group of Egyptian frog men were dispatched to south of Saini to raid Eilat port. Their mission is the destruction of the Israeli amphibious landing crafts thus crippling the Israeli high command by a raid in the north and south.

The crewmen on board of the Nasser now knew the real purpose of their voyage, and they were burning for a real action this time. At this particular moment Sergeant Amgad Fahmy threw a motivational speech for his men:
We are the best at what we do, our opening salvos should score hits from the first time… any delay in action or failure in scoring would give the enemy enough time to respond and chase us putting all of us in hazardous situation.

Fire as if you were training!!!!!
As the sun begins to disappear, the ships entered the post said domain whish the last safe area before entering the enemy controlled waters. The radar of the Dumyat detects two small bodies on the florescent screen, which were two Kumar class torpedo boats coming out of port said with objective to escort Dumyat during the fight which will be vulnerable to enemy air strikes. As its mission is near to enemy shores while the Nasser will be further away in safer distance. Now the two convoys (Dumyat and its escort)(ENS Nasser) are away from each other in the heart of the occupied territorial waters, detecting each other as a two separate dots on the radar.

LOCATION: Mansura air base.
As the night came, Air sergeant Samir Aziz was readying his air craft on the runway accompanied by his colleague Alagamy Ahmed with his aircraft as well. Both air crafts are armed with missiles and ready for any sort of engagement in their unknown mission.

LOCATION: Mediterranean Sea –east of Port Said- destroyer Dumyat
In the pitch black night, getting any visual of the target is a very hard task. Adly made his calculations about target coordinates depending only on the radar system and the last visual of the beacon in bardaweel, as the last spotlight in the darkness. Firing at the target in such a dark night, would easily give away their location to the Israelis. Thus detecting the origin of fire and disposing their location eventually. Despite all of hardships, everything was going according to plan. Israeli forces were not in full combat readiness, due to the Saturday holiday. Also the course of the convoy is delusional for the Israeli forces when they respond.

Firing starts when the artillery on the canal starts shelling the Israeli camps to create the diversion needed for the destroyers to do their jobs drawing away any Israeli counter strike. Then after five minutes from the initial shelling, Dumyat opened its fire on the targets. The opening salvos of the Dumyat scored direct hits, and huge fire balls illuminated the night indicating the ignition of the ammunition. Dumyat continued the bombardment, 40 km away the Nasser started its shelling as well. The combined bombardment caused huge fires and explosions in Balluza and Rumana indicating direct hits to the high volubility targets.

The shelling continued for several minutes until an Israeli helicopter starts mapping the area above Dumyat and Nasser. The orders were given for both destroyers to empty their magazines on the targets and withdraw away before Israeli planes would catch them.
And as the destroyers were falling back, the Israeli planes appeared as expected and started dropping solar flares to illuminate the sea in search for the Egyptian destroyers. The Dumyat and its convoy rushed towards the international waters, while the Nasser took a zigzagged course along the cost of Sinai heading back to Port Said. The Israeli sky hawks planes started targeting the Nasser, in return Nasser responded in kind.
Back in Alexandria naval base, the tension is getting higher after receiving the news came from the frontlines. The battle is raging in waters and the cancelation of the Eilat raid due the absence of the targets and presence of civilian ships with high risk of civilian casualties, which is against the principles of the Egyptian navy.

The Nasser was fighting back fiercely while steaming with full speed towards Port Said. Not very far from Nasser the convoy of Dumyat is monitoring the situation carefully, but can’t interfere yet in order not to give away their location. One of the flares landed on board of the Nasser near its magazine storage, if Adly won’t act swiftly, soon his ship will be engulfed with flames. But thankfully a bomb detonated in the water producing a huge water column that extinguished the fire. In the end Nasser had the upper hand and was able to hit two aircrafts sending one in water while the other was burning back to Israel.

The battle raged on for another three hours, the Nasser managed to evade a barrage of hell. Shrapnel, metal shards and empty bullet casings, littered its deck and bridge. The chase continued near the bardaweel lake cost and the Port Said started to appear on the horizon. The two torpedo boats detached themselves from Dumyat and head back to Port Said base.
Brigadier Sadeq was monitoring the situation and gave his orders to the port to be lit up in order to delude the Israeli planes about the destination of the raiding convoy. At this particular moment the order was given to Samir Aziz and his colleague to fly from Mansoura air base heading towards Port Said to intercept the Israeli planes.

As the Egyptian night squadron detected their Israeli foes, the Israeli realized they were in a death trap. So they chose to withdraw for a while, because they wouldn’t engage the Egyptian destroyers and planes at same time. They would come again to destroy the ships in the port after the skies would become free from any Egyptian air force presence. But what the Israelis didn’t know was that the intervention of Egyptian planes and the delusional lights in Port Said, gave the Egyptian convoy the enough time to head back to Alexandria with full speed in a complete radio silence.
As convoy passed by Rashid coast, the coast guard sent a signal to the naval base in Alexandria stating that two Egyptian destroyers were heading back towards Alexandria.
The raid was an outstanding success, during this heroic raid only first sergeant Abd Elghany was wounded making him the only casualty.
At 06:00 am the crew men were listening to the news on the radio about severe damage inflicted upon the Israelis last night, the Egyptian radio station broadcasted the news at 07:00 am. Every officer and worker in the naval base rejoiced and went out to witness the arrival of the convoy for welcoming them and celebrating their success. Now Israel can’t deny the magnitude of the catastrophe, as they did before deluding the entire world about the truth on the battle ground. Egypt has delivered a strong message to Israel and the world, that our armed forces are still present and active despite the Setback of 1967 and is capable of delivering similar raids in the near future. And reach much further targets than before, thus escalating the conflict till reaching the ultimate goal of liberating the entire Sinai Peninsula from the Israeli presence.

The convoy entered the port in Alexandria raising the flander on it waving violently against the wind. Other ships and boats started blowing their horns to celebrate their achievement .The crew was paraded by the workers and other colleagues in the port. Lieutenant Adly burst into tears of joy, as his first combat mission was a total success. He was later awarded admiral and resigned. He still bursts into tears whenever he remembers the raid.

The 8th of November will be remembered as a glorious day in the history of the Egyptian navy, much like the 21th of October 1967 when the Egyptian torpedo boats sank INS Ellat and INS YAFO. A fine example of success for any operation.AS all the branches of the armed forces worked together in harmony and full coordination in air, land and sea.
